Two Ways of Pricing Chance
Sportsbooks publish a price on each outcome, usually as decimal odds, and that price already contains the bookmaker's margin. Higher odds mean a bigger profit if you win and a smaller implied chance of winning. The odds are the bookmaker's view, not a guarantee of how the match goes.
Spotting the Margin in a Two-Way Market
Add the implied chances of every outcome. If the total is above 100%, the excess is roughly the bookmaker's cut.
- A basketball game is priced 1.90 on each team.
- Implied chance per side: 1 ÷ 1.90 = 52.63%.
- Total book: 52.63% + 52.63% = 105.26%.
- Excess: 105.26% − 100% = 5.26%, the built-in edge on that market.
- Fair odds for a true 50/50 would be 1 ÷ 0.50 = 2.00, so each ₱100 bet returns ₱190 instead of ₱200 when it wins.
Worked Example: A ₱20 Bingo Card in a Shared Draw
Bingo prize structures vary by operator and room, so the prize pool here is invented purely to show the method.
- Suppose 50 cards are sold at ₱20 each, so 50 × ₱20 = ₱1,000 goes in.
- Assume, hypothetically, the room pays a single ₱800 prize.
- With one card and equal cards, your chance is 1 ÷ 50 = 2%.
- Expected return per card: ₱800 ÷ 50 = ₱16, so each ₱20 card costs ₱4 on average over the long run.
- Buying 5 cards lifts your chance to 5 ÷ 50 = 10% but also lifts spend to ₱100, with the same ₱4 average cost per card.
- If two players complete on the same call and the prize splits, each takes ₱400, which lowers the typical payout.
Stretching ₱1,000 Across a Month
Neither format is cheaper by default. What changes your monthly cost is stake size and frequency. These plans use the same ₱1,000 and the examples above.
